'Romeo and Juliet'
Symphonic Tragedy

It is always difficult to describe complex music in words, and it is so particularly in the case of the symphonic tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" by Emilian Sichkin.  It is an intensely dramatic and powerful orchestral piece, which grips the listener from the opening chords of the Overture until the last note of the Epilogue. The composer re-tells the famous Shakespearean tragedy in an unusual musical style combining complex orchestral textures with rock rhythms. In the great tradition of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, the composer tells the story in an unabashed melodic splendor. The listener must simply leave all preconceived notions about styles and dissolve into the music to be taken on a journey of glorious sounds and deep emotions.

To guide the listener on this musical journey, the composer utilizes the technique of leitmotifs, most commonly used in opera.

A leitmotif is a melodic line representing a particular character or an event and appearing throughout the piece whenever the character or the event appears. In addition to the leitmotifs of each character in this drama (Mercutio, Tybalt, Romeo and Juliet) there are themes representing emotions and places. As a backdrop for the events a theme of Verona is heard in scenes 1, 5 and 8. There is a somber and sinister theme of Death, appearing throughout the piece, reminding the listener of the tragic fate of Romeo and Juliet. There is a haunting leitmotif of Destiny with a beautiful mournful lament ending both the Overture and the Epilogue. These leitmotifs are woven into an intricate yet fluid composition of melodies that will remain in the listener's heart long after the music ends.
