Emilian B. Sichkin, a Russian born composer, grew up in an artistic family. His father is a well-known film and theatre actor; most recently portrayed Leonid Brezhnev in the Oliver Stone film "Nixon." His mother is a ballet dancer from the Moscow Bolshoy Theater and later a choreographer for the Mosfilm studios in Moscow. Emilian began music studies at the age of three and wrote his first composition at the age of nine. He studied at the Gnessin School of Music and later at the Moscow Conservatory with Albert Leman. After his father was persecuted on fabricated charges, in protest the whole family immigrated to New York. Emilian's music is deeply rooted in the Romantic tradition and is remarkably free of the avant-garde cacophony of noises and sounds so pervasive in the current classical music trends. Emilian's first published work "Concerto for Astronauts" (1986) was highly acclaimed. It was aired on WQXR and reached millions of people on the "Voice of America." The work was performed at the South Street Seaport in New York City for two consecutive years and used extensively for the ABC Television show "All my children". In 1991 Emilian received his American debut at Carnegie Hall with the performance of "The Winds of Freedom." The performance ended with a standing ovation from the audience. His music has been described as "powerful and inspiring..." by the Voice of America and "... romantic music in the great Russian tradition. It is simply music of the heart." by the WQXR.Emilian's most complex work the symphonic tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" was conceived many years ago at the age of 16 in Moscow while studying piano at the famed Gnessin School of Music. Some of that early material found its way to the current work, which was composed between 1991 and 1993. It is remarkable that Romeo and Juliet was painstakingly recorded using only sampled orchestral sounds and represents the first time a symphonic work of such magnitude was created without any acoustic orchestral recording. The piece represents a synthesis of many styles - romantic symphonies, progressive rock rhythms and harmonic heritage of Rachmaninoff. Above all, this work will haunt its listeners with the richness of melodic material. The recording also brought together a Russian and American choirs and soloists, recorded in Moscow, Russia and New York City. Emilian's quest for perfection in instrumental sound forced him to become intimately acquainted with the electronic media. He studied at the School of Media Arts in New York and Audio Institute of America in California. Emilian completed the work in his studio, from the initial computer work, sample editing and recording to the final editing of the master recording. The complexity of the work, combining symphonic score with electronic instruments and live choir and soloists required enormous effort and stretched over six and half years of continues work.Since the release of "Romeo and Juliet" Emilian finished his work on the ballet "Demon" based on the poem by the XIX century Russian poet M. Y. Lermontoff, opera "Iago" based on Shakespeare's "Othello" and his most recent release - pop suite "The Snow Queen."

Winds of Freedom takes you on an emotional journey through our past and present, moments of darkness and success, tragedies and triumphs. It offers vision of hope, unity and piece for all mankind. Once again Emilian used symphonic orchestra, full choir along with boys choir and electronic orchestra to express what had to be said in a piece of this magnitude. The world premier of Winds of Freedom took place in Carnegie Hall on May 11, 1991... [more]

Based on the fairytale of Hans Christian Andersen "The Snow Queen", the latest release of Emilian Sichkin is an unexpected departure for this composer to the pop world. While using his beloved orchestra along with pop/rock drums and synthesizers and retaining the richness of harmonic material and the beauty of haunting melodies - everything that made him famous among his fans all around the world, Emilian devoted a great deal of time to the energy and power of the pop and rock music. Very unusual, eclectic (it even includes a medieval madrigal sung by a child's voice) and beautiful album in the world of popular music.[more]
